Malaysians disappointed with demo against Bar Council. Where to now?

Friday, 15 August 2008

The Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) which is dominated by Umno Youth who was also part of the demonstrating groups outside the Bar Council building that ambushed the forum on conversion of Islam is continuing its fuss over the Bar Council again for not accepting GPMS’ request for a meeting one day prior to the forum.

The GPMS leadership should be very clear that the Bar Council had already made several statement explaining the objective of the forum and urged people not to be worried of the impact as their primary purpose of this forum has been clearly outlined: to help resolve issues and problems of families affected by the conversion of Islam and to prevent more misconception.

When the Bar Council is trying to “cure” and seek a prevention, isn’t that good for the whole community as a whole? In other way the Bar Council is also doing their part to preserve national unity by offering their legal expertise to prevent such occurrence from further affecting and harming the multi racial communities in our nation.

So we are asking why did the Umno Youth (of course with GPMS too), the Persatuan Peguam Syariah Malaysia and the Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia in particular made and provoked the situation into saying that this forum had threatened the official religion of this nation. From where and which part of the forum’s agenda that stated such and such move and action would neutralize the official religion of this nation from the federal constitution?

Furthermore, a statement by the president of the Persatuan Peguam Syariah Malaysia that the Bar Council presidency should be given to a Muslim lawyer in order to avoid such forums to be organized in future is not a professional statement based on his legal qualification and profession. He is now trying to uphold religion on top of the legal profession. So, is there a Syariah Constitution now to overrule the Federal Constitution? Where is the sense of National Unity after 50 years of independence?
