When Penang and Melaka states were jointly declared as World Heritage sites by Unesco recently, Gerakan leaders, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Teng Chang Yeow were quick to claimed their credit and achievement, nad denying any roles that the present state government had taken since 8 March 2008.
First of all, why did Dr Koh and Teng wanted to deny the present Penang state government of its role in the recent achievement ?When Unesco made the declarations recently, Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng did not claim its rights nor credit towards the Unesco's award. Guan Eng had instead credited and dedicated the achievement to the tireless NGOs and the people of Penang who had long worked very hard to help Penang aclaim this international recognition.
So why did the Gerakan leaders politicised and made so much fuss on this ? The heritage recognition was meaned for everyone in Penang who had contributed towards the effort and such achievement does not solely belongs to any parties including Gerakan, MCA, PKR, DAP or any of its leaders. The recognition in fact belongs to everyone in Penang.
