We would like to congratulate Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng for initiating a move to create a state opposition leader position.
The initiation of this position also proves that the DAP led Pakatan Rakyat state government is sincere in promoting its democratic and transparent platform in the state which had been pledged during the previous general elections.
According to Guan Eng, the creation of the opposition leader position is also in line with the state government’s recognition of the opposition’s role in the state to provide check and balance in the administration.
However, state Umno secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim was unhappy because the allowance of the state opposition is too little and wanted the state government to also accommodate the opposition leader with an office, a researcher and a clerk.
In response, we would like to ask Datuk Azhar not to be too greedy. Datuk Azhar is asking for too much. When BN was governing the state prior to the general elections, did they recognize the role of the opposition at that time? Did they initiate any effort to accommodate the opposition with an official position previously?
The answer is no! BN never even recognize the role of the oppositions then. So, why acted so double standard in issues related to democratic reforms? In a true democratic platform, Umno is not qualified to talk nor speak on this topic, as the party’s administration from within itself is already undemocratic.
